Abstract

A research on acute toxicity of jamu mengkudu (Morinda citrifolia Linn) on wistar albino male rats was done. This research aimed to determine acute toxicity potential (LD50) of jamu mengkudu (Morinda citrifolia Linn), evaluated clinical symptoms that perhaps occur due to the giving of jamu mengkudu per oral, single dosage on 24 hours to 15 days observation. The research uses twenty-five male rats, which are divided into five groups. Group I was negative control with 10ml/kgBB weight dosage aquadest. Group II was given jamu mengkudu sample with 1g/kg weight dosage.

Then, successively Group III with 2g/kg weight dosage, Group IV with 4 g/kg weight dosage, and Group V was given test sample with highest dosage, that was 8 g/kg weight dosage. On the basis of data analysis result having been performed both quantitatively and qualitatively, it could be said that jamu mengkudu single dosage orally on male rats from 1 g/kg weight dosage to highest level 8 g/kg weight dosage did not cause toxic effect causing damage on vital organs (such as heart, lung, flank, kidney, liver, and spleen).

Single dosage giving of jamu mengkudu sample on male rats up to maximum dosage could be provided technically to trial animal (8 g/kg weight) did not cause mortality on research animal. So acute toxicity potential (LD50) of morinda syrup could not be determined. It used quasi LD50 to determine acute toxicity, that was, bigger than 8 g/kg weigh, according to Loomis criteria (1978), that acute toxicity potential of jamu mengkudu sample included into Practically Non Toxic.

Thus based on ANOVA test result with significance level 95%, it could be said that the giving of jamu mengkudu from 1 g/kg weight dosage to 8 g/kg weight dosage did not show significant
